Not many realize there is a mountain biking paradise sitting in the middle of Los Angeles.
The Verdugo Mountains are a wild oasis amongst sprawling urban development. Surrounded by Glendale, Burbank, and Pasadena on all sides, this small yet rugged mountain range is an outdoorsman’s paradise for mountain biking in LA.
A series of interweaving fire roads connect the eight mile width of the Verdugos together and make for excellent mountain biking for both beginners and intermediate riders. Following the ridgeline from peak to peak sits the Verdugo Motorway, a smooth dirt fire road, which although only reaching 3,126 feet at its highest peak, features excellent views of Downtown Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean, and the Angeles National Forest.
More experienced riders gravitate to the technically challenging single track trails of La Tuna Canyon on the Northwest side of the mountains. However recent fire damage has left this trail in gnarly condition, it’s recommended that only advanced riders explore this area with extreme caution.
If you’re looking for an adventurous mountain biking experience a short drive from anywhere in the city, then definitely consider checking out the often forgotten Verdugo Mountains. You’ll have a ton of fun exploring the ridgeline and snapping great photos of the city while avoiding the crowds of Griffith Park. We recommend riding an electric mountain bike in order to easily climb up the steeper slopes so you can make the most of your ride.
If you’re looking for an electric bike rental then contact Silver Lake Electric Bicycles in Burbank, CA or consider taking one of their guided LA bike tours and riding with an expert to ensure you have an amazing time.
